I’ve been doing some thinking, and that has been known to cause trouble in the past. We had a visit from Metro Health Staff the other day. They were checking out our Hot Water System and Environs for the source of the Legionella Bacteria that has Hospitalized my Wife, Christine. All went well and we have had no adverse findings at our House. They explained to me that the Legionella Bacteria spread through either Gardening Compost or by infecting Hot Water Systems that aren’t hot enough. Now, I’m not getting into any argument about the pros and cons of the ‘Climate Smart’ scheme which asked us all to turn down the temperatures of our Hot Water Systems to help save the Planet and us all some money on our Power Bills. What I’m concerned about is the ‘Off Peak’ Power controls that the Electricity Companies currently use. They are allowed to remotely turn off our Hot Water Systems during periods of peak power consumption, to allow them to meet the Electricity demands of Industry and Commerce. The Hot Water Systems can be turned off for Hours, sometimes staying off until well after 10:00 at Night. This results in the temperature of the stored water falling drastically. Anyone who has had a lukewarm Shower after the Kids and the partner has used all the hottest water can attest to this. Now, according to the Health Dept., this fall in the temperature is just the thing the potentially lethal Legionella Bacteria need to spread in. Should this be regarded as a Public Health hazard?? Should the Power Companies be allowed to fiddle with the temperatures of Domestic Hot Water just to help them meet their Commercial Promises? Should the practice of ‘Off Peak’ Hot Water be banned? Aren’t situations like this the way epidemics start?
