I’ve been tackling my latest manuscript revisions and just finished reading the “book” cover to cover, so to speak. I am happy with a large percentage of it but there are still a few weak spots and my frustration level, trying to figure out how to boost and strengthen the scenes, is at an all time high. In looking through my notes from the last few years after conversations with writers far more talented than I, I found this bit below: “Expand on the fear—the living everyday being fearful of someone finding out you’re gay. Young gay folks, even older gay folks, often live with fear and then make a conscious effort to, everyday of their life, be what others think or expect them to be. At the very least they fear someone will see through their façade. The fear is constant, universal, permeating. It’s like having one pair of sneakers and waking up everyday and putting them on, wearing only them. Without the sneakers you will burn your feet on the hot asphalt. Everyone around you seems content with his or her sneakers but you dream of going barefoot. It cannot happen. Your sneaker community will ridicule you, make fun, say things, taunt and tease you. “It’s the way life is supposed to be,” they will say. “It’s always been done this way.”” I don’t remember writing this. Nevertheless it pretty much sums up the experience for many in the LGBT community.
