I’ve had ideas about organising tango festival in Rostov-on-Don for quite a long time. I’ve been living in this city for many years now but it still manages to bring me pleasant surprises and discoveries. Walking around the city I often thought how can I share this feeling of warmth and kindness with all my friends who never had been there. Maybe it’s because of it’s unique position between East and West. Or maybe because it’s most southern city in European part of Russia and everything further down is officially a part of Asia. I love this city because of it makes people do wonderful things instead of sitting at home and watching TV. There is lots of music and musicians, it’s a most important jazz city in Russia. You can often hear someone playing jazz or other tunes in city centre. Many theatre and dance festivals are held here as well. People here are full of energy and meeting all them on a busy street you may think that pace of life here is so fast. But take just a turn or two and you may find yourself in cozy street cafe, sitting in a shade of green trees and drinking tasty coffee with homemade sweets. Walking here I’m always surprised how good combination of 19th century building and modern ones could be. Not that many building managed to survive World War II, but each one of them is worth seeing. I want to bring special attention to theatre buildings in Rostov: one of them resembles tractor and second is shaped like piano. Eating well is also important here. Main local specialities are various fish dishes and crawfish with a beer. Every year I’m happy this spring and summer came here so early. People in other places still see snow and mud when here it’s all warm and green already. We selected festival dates so that it’s not super hot yet, but you can already feel very nice summer weather and also try local strawberries, cherries and apricots.
