I’ve heard from so many of you over the last few days who are disappointed with the election results last Tuesday, so I wanted to write you a quick note with some of my thoughts. First of all, I am disappointed too. Democrats in Washington state and across the country worked hard to lay out our vision for a government and an economy that works for all families—but voters across the country were frustrated, and Democrats clearly ended up bearing the brunt of that last Tuesday. But disappointment won’t change anything. Looking backward won’t make things better. We need to keep looking forward, and not lose focus on delivering results for the people and policies we care about most. I’ve been in the majority before, and I’ve been in the minority. And while it’s nice to be able to set the agenda from the majority, I know that you all expect me to work for you and fight for your priorities no matter who is in charge of Congress—and that is exactly what I am going to do. Since the election, Republicans have said they would like to use their majority to work with Democrats and get things done for the American people. I hope that truly ends up happening. I’m never going to set aside my values and principles, of course—and I am going to continue laying out my vision for how we can create 21st century jobs and move toward an economy that works for all Washington state families, not just the wealthiest few. But I was proud to work across the aisle to create jobs and invest in Washington state priorities when Democrats were in the majority, and I plan to continue working with anyone, from any party, who is willing to work with me to help people, solve problems, and deliver results for our families and communities. So, what do we do next? My answer: keep fighting. If there is one thing Ive learned over the years it’s this: the people who make a difference in our state and country are the ones who never give up, who keep up the fight—no matter how hard it gets. The election didn’t go as well as we hoped last Tuesday, but that’s happened before, and I am confident the next one will go better. And even though it may take some time to process the results of this election, our focus will remain on the same key question: Is this country moving in the right direction and working for all of our families and communities? We’ve made a lot progress since the Great Recession, but we have a long way to go, and a whole lot more work to do to boost the economy and make sure every family has the opportunities they deserve in Washington state and across the country. So I am not giving up—and I hope you’re not either! We’ll keep this conversation going in the weeks and months ahead as the dust settles from this election and we head into the new Congress. But no matter what, I am going to be in there fighting for Washington state priorities and to keep our country moving in the right direction—and I am proud to have your help and support. -Patty
