I’ve seen some postings lately from admirers of Ayn Rand, advertising the premiere of part III of the movie “Atlas Shrugged.” For those of you who think of her as some honest, intellectual goddess of rational thought, you need to know something else about her: she began her first novel, “The Little Street”, as a way of expressing her admiration for a serial killer, William Edward Hickman, who murdered and dismembered a 12 year old girl named Marion Parker. Hickman abducted the 12 year old Parker, strangled her, dismembered her body, sent taunting ransom letters to her parents and showed up to collect the money by dumping the parts of her body in front of her father and driving off with the cash, was described in Rand’s personal journals this way: Other people do not exist for him, and he does not see why they should, she wrote, gushing that Hickman had no regard whatsoever for all that society holds sacred, and with a consciousness all his own. He has the true, innate psychology of a Superman. He can never realize and feel other people.’” Rand spent her life writing contemptuously of the poor and ridiculed the virtue of compassion in society. Given that she spent her final years living from Social Security and accepting Medicare to treat her cancer, you might of thought her worst sins defined her as a hypocrite. Instead, her writings and actions meet all the criteria of something far worse: a sociopath. To find out more of her admiration for this serial killer, you can read the following article. Whether you want to buy tickets to the movie from her novel…well, that one’s up to you. alternet.org/story/145819/ayn_rand%2C_hugely_popular_author_and_inspiration_to_right-wing_leaders%2C_was_a_big_admirer_of_serial_killer?page=0%2C0
