Achievements in Education Sector under the leadership of Shri HarshDev Singh as a Minister for Education (November 2002 to November 2005) 1. Opened more than 10,000 schools, within a period of three years. Provided schools and education guarantee centre in each and every village of the state. 2. Opened 22 Degree Colleges in the state within a period of three years, 12 in Jammu region and 10 in Kashmir. 3. Government University Campus got approved from the government ofIndia and UGC for almost every district of J&K. 4. Appointed 32,000 youth as Rehbar-e- Taleem and Education volunteers in the state. 5. Regularized thousands of ReTs as general line teachers. 6. Gave promotions to about 22,000 employees of education department in a short span of three years thus removingstagnation. 7. Fulfilled the 20 years old demand of teachers, masters, lecturers on theremoval of the pay anomalies and giving them higher scales of pay thus benefiting around 100,000 employees of the department. 8. Introduction of English mediumin all government schools, from class-I. 9. Introduction of KG classes in all government schools. 10. Introduction of post graduate classes in Degree Colleges. 11. Launched the scheme of free distribution of books to all students of government schools from class 1st to 8th. 12. Got 20 existing government colleges accredited from National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) as top colleges in the country. 13. Educational Satellite (EDUSAT) launched in the educational institutions starting from degree colleges. Two hubs established in the first instance are each in Jammu and Kashmir. 14. Village Education Committees strengthened and empowered in the state. 15. Job-oriented courses launchedin the colleges which included tourism and travel management, TV and video production, biotechnology, industrial chemistry, medical plants and chemistry, creating writing and communication skills, web designing, food technology, information technology etc. 16. Academic Staff College got approved for Jammu. Earlier there was only onesuch college in Kashmir. 17. Admission in government schools lowered from six years to four years. 18 4000 posts of teachers referred to SSB for selection results awaited. 19. 2000 posts of lecturers referred to PSC for selection result awaited.
