JACQUES LOUIS PEREE GRAND AND PETIT BIRDS OF PARADISE - NO 1 AND NO 4 - AFTER JACQUES BARRABAND (1769 - 1803) WE WILL CONSIDER ALL SERIOUS OFFERS ON THESE VERY RARE AND HIGHLY SORT AFTER MASTERPIECES ASKING $18995 NEGOTIABLE We offer for sale 2 X Jacques Louis Peree steel plate hand coloured engravings after Jacques Barraband dating from between 1769 to 1803 but no later. The 2 engravings are as follows: 1. Le Grand Oisseau de Paradise No 1 – Male Grand bird of Paradise No 1 2. Le Petit Oisseau de Paradsie No 4 – Female Grand bird of Paradise No 4 Engraved by Jacques Louis Peree, French engraver active in Paris between 1796 and 1803 Finished by Langlois of France Sizes (actual total size) - 59 x 41.5 cm HISTORY Purchased from a local second-hand dealer and both items were framed but the frames were in terrible condition so to save further damage, the engravings were removed. They Male or Grand bird of Paradise is in MINT condition with the Female or Petit bird of Paradise suffering from some slight foxing which is to be expected after over 208 years but there are not tears of any kind which is quite rare give that they are late 18th to early 19th century originals. Now a bit about Jacques Barraband and Jacques Louis Peree. Jacques Barraband was commissioned by Napoleon to produce a study of birdlife around the world which included studies of Parrots, Birds of Paradise etc and the entire study totalled 300 drawings with a detail and anatomically exacting likeness that stunned the world. Barraband was the greatest ornithological artist of all time, producing drawings of such incredibly accuracy and beauty that they have been unmatched even up till modern times. The most sort after and highly valuable of the drawings he produced were the Birds of Paradise series, of which, I have 2 of the most desirable, namely the Grand and Petit birds of Paradise being No 1 and No 4 of the 300 produced and the Birds of Paradise drawings he made. These 2 are among the rarest, highly sort after and the most valuable. Jacques Louis Peree was then commissioned by Barraband to reproduce his original drawings in other mediums and one of these was Steel plate engravings which are denoted by the clearly defined indented plate mark around the images and this is a high selling point and a qualifier of incredible quality. He reproduced all 300 of the original Barraband drawings and obviously, the earlier of the editions produced are the more valuable. With these 2 being No 1 and 4 of the Birds of Paradise series making them within the first 10, these are incredibly sort after and highly valuable. Jacques Louis Peree was a French engraver active in France between 1769 and 1803 at the same time that Barraband was commissioned by Napoleon to produce this series. They were then produced by Langlois of France. There are many prints after Jacques Barraband available but very few original engravings ever survive, especially from the 1803 period when Barraband died making them extremely rare and sort after as I said.
