JADIN: CHAPTER 1 Witness the Impossible The stare from behind the big oak lasted for what seemed days. Many escape attempts had come and gone before Jade realized she was trapped for the duration. All entities on Lazrith know the great consequences dealt for interrupting the process of a de-glowing. Being a young entity, the goal of trying to occupy her mind to avoid the screams of the mighty genmate proves painful. Thoughts center around the many stories she has listened to the wisemen tell about horrible curses bestowed on entities who have disrupted or interfered with de-glowings in the past. A focus of hope conveys that this will be the needed strength against trying to end this one. Several times in the past, innocent passers who have seen a de-glowing begin also suffered a loss of their own. The pity felt for the genmate in pain destroyed their self-control, forcing their instincts to mandate help. Most found their succor resulting in their own beheading by the Gen, but it has been said that some were punished by being left alive without a limb, eyesight or hearing. Wisemen never state exact occurrences, and it is not certain the tales are true. The recollection of the stories and uncertainty of the tales’ worth prove effective enough. Though a potent guilt presses her mind, Jade closes her frightened green eyes tightly to focus on the trembling stutters of her Wiseman, Sasstone, as he spoke of the legends. His story telling tactics prove effective with young entities. The wisemen have seen the punishments being administered. They deeply fear them, yet strongly and obediently agree with them. Now faced with the agony of listening and watching alone, Jade confronts irreparable odds as a young entity condemned to the helplessness of doing nothing. “Maybe the wisemen tell the stories with such fear, because they know that almost every entity will experience a de-glowing within their life span.” She spoke to the strong oak which concealed her presence. “There is no chance of any being helping this genmate. I am the only one here and I always take heed in the words of the wisemen. Oak, I wish you could help me. He is so magnificent, this genmate!” Her attention was jolted by a loud disturbing cry. She peeked from behind the tree trunk to see the genmate’s female walking away. The mature female entity had completed her task. The golden hoverer a short distance away was marked for destruction. He screamed out to his female as she faded in the distance. “I am a genmate! Don’t’ take that from me, please. I am begging you! I am so sorry. So, so sorry!” The words became frantic and pushed through obvious pain, “Please Gen, don’t let her walk away. Help me…please?” Jade forced her hands to her ears. It was clear the Gen was unwilling to help. She looked towards the direction of the valley to see if the female might turn back, but she was gone and plainly did not intend to reverse the action. Cries from the genmate’s soul became loud and unbearable. “Don’t leave me here, please! I beg you to stop this.” A rip tore through Jade’s chest and she forced her body to turn away from the sight. Clasping her hands over her mouth, she suppressed her own cries from surfacing. Many tears coursed down her cheeks and through her fingers, and her body began to rock itself back and forth while she whispered out loud, “Don’t help, don’t help, don’t’ help.” The agonizing, echoing yells of the dying mentor increased in intensity. “Someone please help me! The pain is too much! It’s too much. Please…anyone!” Jade’s whispers turned to vocal commands, demanding she halt interference. “Don’t listen, don’t help, and don’t pay attention.” The frantic tone of her own voice shredded through her confidence as she wept. The fight to block out the occurrence became difficult and unsettling. If her mind would not stop questioning every portion of what she had been taught, she could ignore what she was hearing. Although a fear of what was there taunted her, she had to peek out again to see what was happening. Curiosity would not allow her to ignore it. Anguish grabbed hold of her as her eyes caught sight of him and she felt herself fall to her knees. “Look Oak! He’s so frightened,” she cried out loud. “He looks as innocent as a tiny mortal crying for his mother after a nightmare. Only his mother will never come. I’ve never seen a genmate weak. They are so valiant and mighty. It doesn’t seem real. It doesn’t seem right.” Her words were interrupted by another echoing scream. This one came not from the pain, but fear of ending. The shout of fear coerced a stream of wetness to pour down her reddened cheeks. A stabbing pain hit her chest at full force with his final cry. “No, please…,” his voice shrilled upward towards the Gen, “please Gen, please! I beg forgiveness! I beg…” An instant later, the mighty genmate’s consciousness failed. Jade’s eyes focused on the bright blue streak which darted down from above and into his bared, half-glowing, weakened chest. She stepped out from behind the oak to sit quietly and softly down. Watching the end of this genmate’s existence was the only thing remaining. His cries had stopped, so the guilt pains asking her to help had let up a small portion. Amazement took over her pain as she watched the lights and powers of the Gen being exposed only a few feet from where she sat. The blue streak soon disappeared. The dying genmate floated only a few inches from the ground. His golden glow had turned to a dull yellow and was fading still. Several mixed flickers of gold and yellow became increasingly faint as the minutes continued. It was almost over. Jade wiped the remaining tears from her cheeks and felt no more fall. The state of astonishment lingered for a few moments before she found herself standing to walk towards the death of power. A deep breath forced itself inside of her as she watched his body fully touch the ground. She took one step forward. He did not move. She stepped forward one more time. Still, no movement. A feeling of safety came upon her and she found herself ambulating to his body. The desire to bend down and touch him took control of her, and she couldn’t stop herself from brushing her fingers through his hair. The softness of it caught her sense of disbelief. A crackle from above shook her current concentration. A look upward revealed the top branches of the old oak swaying briskly back and forth as if it was trying to warn her. It suddenly occurred to her that this powerless genmate would soon awaken to his new mortal state. With a step back she felt a sadness come over her. “Here lies the strongest of our world, destroyed.” At that time she also remembered the wisemen’s emphasis and warnings about occurrences following a de-glowing. A genmate turned mortal will destroy all around him when he wakes. That is why the females take them so far from the populations when they destroy them. The de-glowed genmates incur a maddening phase when they wake. They must work through this phase using physical anger as their force; and this physical strength is immense. Myths tell entities that their strength is so high during this phase; they have been known to tear entire trees from roots and toss them like sticks. Fearing this, Jade turned towards her village and ran the entire distance between the event she had just witnessed and the edge of town. She was too baffled and anxious to return home, so she began her journey towards her favorite wiseman, Sasstone. Many questions bogged down thoughts and she had absolutely no answers. It was certain that Sasstone would help relieve all of her confusion. “What did this genmate do to his female entity that was so horrible? Why did she destroy his existence? How strong is she for doing this?” She rambled hundreds of questions in seconds of time. What she needed was to tell Sasstone of the happening and hear explanations to all of her confusion. Impatience had the better of her prior to arriving at his door. It opened before she could knock. “Well, Little Miss Jadin Chastine Stone. What a pleasant surprise.” The wiseman was always pleased to see Jade. Every wiseman calls an entity by her entire name out of courtesy and knowledge. To everyone else, Little Miss Jadin Chastine Stone is just Jade. A female is referred to as Little Miss so and so before mating stage and Miss Madam so and so after mating stage has been reached. The wisemen determine who is a Little Miss and who is a Miss Madam and only they are allowed to use the titles. There is never any doubt about it. They all know at once without consulting one another. One morning a female will go out into the valley being called Little Miss by each wiseman she encounters. An hour later, she can walk through and be a full-fledged Miss Madam to every wiseman who called her Little Miss and hour before. They do not need to share opinion, they just know. They all see and think exactly what is as it passes them. Just as the genmates are the strength of Lazrith, the wisemen are the knowledge. “Please come in and sit down. I expected to see you this morning for biscuits.” Jade sensed the wiseman was eager to hear what had kept her, so she wasted no time in telling him what she had witnessed. She began by going into great detail about the de-glowing, but stopped suddenly in mid-sentence after noticing Sasstone’s expression had dropped to scared confusion. There was no doubt that this was not anything close to what he was expecting to hear. Both stood quiet for a lengthy period, before Jade grew antsy at the silence. “Wiseman Sasstone? Did I say something wrong?” His voice stuttered a bit, “My dear Little Miss Jadin Chastine Stone. Oh, my dear Little Miss Jadin!” Minutes passed, but he said nothing more. Clearly, he was expecting to hear her say she had been detoured by an animal which grabbed her attention or that she had over slept or even momentarily forgotten what day it was. Absolutely anything other than what she had spoken. The blank stare caused agitation. She could not stand it or the silence for one more second and forgot her manners. With voice raised high in pitch, she demanded he speak. “Wiseman Sasstone! You are frightening me. What is so horrible? Females have witnessed other females performing de-glowings before.” The silence remained. “Say something!” demanded Jade. “Do something!” Although no answers for her questions were received, the loud commands seemed to waken Sasstone from his trance. The wiseman stood, paced back and forth and began mumbling to himself, “It can’t be. It is, but it can’t be. How is it? How can it be? It can’t be.” He mumbled the same thing over and over several times. Then, without a single word of ease to her confusion, he stopped and turned his entire body towards her. “Jade, you have to go now. The other wisemen are on their way. By telling me, you have told them. United, we will decide what to do and what it means!” Fear and confusion rocketed inside of her, “But, what..?” Before she could get another word out, Wiseman Sasstone pushed her out the door and closed it behind. Shock and uncertainty of what had just happened thrust upon her. Before she realized it, the desire for destruction of her baffled state had caused her to walk back towards the actual de-glowing rather than going home. About half the distance there, she stopped to sit beneath a small pine for shade. She wanted to be absolutely certain she had given the new mortal time to adjust and work through his anger phase before returning. The sitting time only raised more disarray and she found herself speaking to the sky in hopes the Gen would be listening. “I didn’t notice at the time, but Wiseman Sasstone called me Jade while pushing me out the door. This occurrence can only be bad. A wiseman has never called a female by one name. Not ever. Not once in all history. But, he clearly called me Jade. Just Jade. There is no doubt.” The thought began to discomfort her greatly. “What did I do that was so terrible? Should I have helped the genmate? No, they have always said not to. Is this genmate an exception? Am I an exception? Why couldn’t he just tell me what all of this means?”
