JAPAN – A SERENE MOMENT In December 2004, Kenji (#1 Son), Mabel, and I sojourned to Nihon (Japan), The Land of the Rising Sun, our favorite vacation destination. Mitsutoshi and Kazuko Tsutsumi kindly hosted us on their hilly country farm in a glen near Nirasaki-Shi (City) in Yamanashi-Ken (Province) near Fuji-Yama (Mount Fuji). We deeply cherished our precious times in Nirasaki-Shi as we explored culture, cuisine, and landscape in this enchanted place. These memories of the wonderful people and glorious vista are eternally etched in our hearts. After nine years, the allure of Nirasaki-Shi still captivates my ethos. So, I composed this poem - “A Serene Moment.” A SERENE MOMENT During a crisp wintry day At a marvelous oasis I effusively ponder A serene moment In the heart of Japan. As a golden sun rises in early dawn I pensively trek Amid bare orchards and frigid fields In rustic Nirasaki glen. At a swanky vista I gaze across a gorgeous scene Lofty peaks of Yatsutake Mountains Snowy crown of Mount Fuji. On an idyllic farm I fondly discern An ancient house with a leafy garden As koi swarm in a crystal pond. At a family reunion Elders chatter Children frolic During a sumptuous feast In paradise of Japan. © Raymond Douglas Chong
