JEFF CARLSON THOMAS JEFFERSON Third President of the United States (1801–1809). Some interesting things about Thomas Jefferson: He oversaw a peaceful transition in power, purchased the vast Louisiana Territory from France (1803). He sent the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804–1806) to explore the new west. A leader in the Enlightenment, Jefferson was a polymath who spoke five languages. Was deeply interested in science, invention, architecture, religion and philosophy. He founded the University of Virginia after his presidency. One of his Famous Quotes I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. came from the following letter to John Taylor in 1816: And I sincerely believe, with you, that banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies; and that the principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but swindling futurity on a large scale. In spite of right-wing Christian attempts to rewrite history to make Jefferson into a Christian, little about his philosophy resembles that of Christianity. Although Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence wrote of the Laws of Nature and of Natures God, there exists nothing in the Declaration about Christianity. Like all the Founding Fathers he feared Bankers and Religion taking control of the Government. “Educate and inform the whole mass of the people... They are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty.” Thomas Jefferson.
