JFJ Press Release: JFJ Awarded UNDEF Grant to Implement New Project Friday, January 9, 2015, Kingston, Jamaica - Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) has been awarded a grant from The United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF) to implement the project -Understanding our Rights, Roles and Responsibilities – Ensuring Citizen’s Participation for a Better Jamaica. The project seeks to address the low awareness, understanding and adherence to human rights and civic principles among citizens and duty-bearers in Jamaica. It facilitates a multi-faceted community intervention that builds the knowledge and capacity of residents to safeguard their rights and advocate for meaningful change; targets training to new police recruits and serving officers on human rights standards in order to help facilitate transformation within the police force; and engages national awareness-raising and advocacy campaign that educates the general public on human rights. The project spans two years and supports the realisation of Jamaica’s Vision 2030 development strategy. The government of Jamaica has recognised good governance – the integration of human rights, accountability and citizen participation – as key to the country’s advancement. However, its ability to achieve this has been undermined by low levels of human rights and civic literacy, lack of engagement and high levels of marginalisation which contribute to a cycle of poverty, violence and state abuse. JFJ anticipates that this new project, Understanding our Rights, Roles and Responsibilities – Ensuring Citizen’s Participation for a Better Jamaica will help bring about some of the improvements that are needed. -30- jamaicansforjustice.org/2015/01/09/jfj-press-release-jfj-awarded-undef-grant-to-implement-new-project/
