JOB POSTING # 2014 – 10 Internal or External Posting Truck Driver City of East Chicago Public Works OPENING DATE: Monday, July 21, 2014 CLOSING DATE TO APPLY: Open Until Filled EXEMPT/NON-EXEMPT: Non-Exempt POSITION STATUS: Regular Full Time DEPARTMENT: Public Works REPORTS TO: Zone 1, 2, 3 Supervisor and Foreman PAY RANGE: In accordance to the City of East Chicago’s and Teamster Local 142 Collective Bargaining Agreement $14.87 DESCRIPTION Operational requirements for the East Chicago Public Works necessitate that the person performing the Job of a Truck Driver must be available for 24-hour on-call duty. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Dump, Garbage, and Recycling Truck Operation (40%) This dimension includes the following specific duties and responsibilities: Drives dump, garbage, and recycling truck to and from work sites, Drives and parks dump, garbage, and recycling truck in confined areas, Follows all applicable traffic rules and regulations, Properly uses trailer attached to dump, garbage, and recycling truck, Assist the Public Works personnel (labors) to clean any and all debris, garbage and/or material around cans, alleys and streets Maintains log of dump, garbage, and recycling truck activities. Loading and Unloading (40%) This dimension includes the following specific duties and responsibilities: Oversees loading of dump, garbage, and recycling truck to insure cargo is properly distributed and secured, Oversees unloading of dump, garbage, and recycling truck to insure that cargo is properly removed, Directs and assists work of other Public Works personnel to insure that cargo is properly loaded and unloaded, May assist other Public Works personnel in properly loading and unloading cargo. Equipment Preventive Maintenance and Cleaning (5 %) This dimension includes the following specific duties and responsibilities: Performs truck walk-around inspection at the beginning of shift, Checks tire pressure, fluid levels, operating lights, and gauges prior to operating truck, Adds fluids and/or air as needed, Conducts 4 – step air brake test prior to driving truck, Cleans truck after use, Reports equipment problems requiring additional assistance to Foreman, and completes inspection report. Snow Plowing (5%) This dimension includes the following specific duties and responsibilities: Attaches snow plow to truck, Provides city snow plowing assistance, as needed, upon completion of certification Provides snow removal assistance, as needed. upon completion of certification Removes snow plow from truck after use. Teamwork (5 %) This dimension includes the following specific duties and responsibilities: Works effectively with other members of the Public Works to insure efficient operations, Works effectively with personnel from other city departments, Safety (5%) This dimension includes the following specific duties and responsibilities: Performs all job tasks in a safe manner, Complies with all department and city safety policies, rules, and regulations, Identifies and corrects/reports safety hazards when they occur. Safety Hazards Involved in Loading and Unloading Garbage and Recycling Items. Applicable OSHA, EPA, State, City, and Public Works Safety Policies, Rules, and Regulations. Public Works Operations and Processes. East Chicago Streets and Locations. Required Skills (proficiency in performing specific tasks) Operation of Dump, Garbage, and Recycling Truck. Communication With Hand Signals. Completion of Vehicle Maintenance Reports. Required Abilities (general mental or physical capabilities) Reading at the 10th Grade Level. EDUCATION/LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED High School Diploma or GED Possess and maintain a current valid commercial driver’s license (CDL). LEGALLY REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS A current and valid commercial driver’s license EXPERIENCE REQUIRED Minimum of age 21 years No experience necessary. Good driving record, no major accidents in the past three (3) years.
