JOE COCKER I wasnt a lifelong fan of Joe Cocker--but in the early 70s when his album/movie Mad Dogs and Englishmen was all the rage, I was an enormous fan of the man who did all the arrangements and played piano on that album: Leon Russell. Probably the greatest example of their collaboration (and one that kicks extremely royal booty) is this song. At age 16 I learned this version and used to play it on piano and sing it at full volume, doing my best Joe Cocker with my voice and my best Leon Russell with my hands. Im sure the old folks who were my neighbors at the time are still carrying the mental trauma of that time. Fly on, Joe! I know youll be back--and well all be rockin when you are.
