JOHNNY BELINDA (1948) The film stars Jane Wyman, Lew Ayres, Charles Bickford, Agnes Moorehead, Stephen McNally, and Jan Sterling. Wymans performance earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress. . The film dramatizes the consequences of spreading lies and rumors, and the horror of rape. The latter subject had previously been prohibited by the Motion Picture Production Code. Johnny Belinda is widely considered to be the first Hollywood film for which the restriction was relaxed, and as such was controversial at the time of its initial release. The studio did not care much for the script and the film itself. They gave it a low budget and assigned the great Jean Negulesco to direct. Negulesco was an artist as well and had a great eye. the film was going over budget. Jean was nearly released of the film and was going to be replaced. After much conversation, They kept him on to finish the film However he would never make another Warner Bros. film. He did however get the last laugh. When the academy awards were announced, JOHNNY BELINDA Received Oscar Nominations in almost every category 12. Negulesco has been quoted as saying, JOHNNY BELINDA is my personal favorite film. Also 1948 was a big year for Jane Wyman, She divorced Ronald Reagan and won an Oscar along with other accolades. ***AIRS MONDAY AFTERNOON ON TCM. Beautiful film.
