JSO opens 2015 with special “Up Close” concerts featuring Richard Sherman and Ralph Votapek on Saturday, Jan. 17 Jackson Symphony Orchestra favorites, Richard Sherman, on flute, and Ralph Votapek, on piano, will present an Up Close concert on Saturday, January 17 at 7 p.m. in JSO’s Weatherwax Hall, 215 West Michigan Avenue, Downtown Jackson, featuring French Classics – Works by Faure, Poulenc and Franck. Sonatas for flute and piano will fill the hall throughout the evening and guests will get a chance to experience the mastery of these highly accomplished and recognized musicians in an intimate setting. Richard Sherman (flute) and Ralph Votapek (piano) This duo is extremely revered throughout the classical music industry. Sherman is professor of flute at the Michigan State University College of Music and is active as a soloist, orchestral musician and recitalist. He received a bachelor of music degree from the Eastman School of Music, a master of music degree from Northwestern University, and had postgraduate study at the Royal College of Music in London. He is former principal flute with the Rochester (NY) Philharmonic Orchestra and is principal flute with the Chautauqua (NY) Symphony Orchestra and the Lansing Symphony Orchestra. Votapek has made literally hundreds of appearances as soloist with major American orchestras. Born in Milwaukee, WI, he began his musical education at age nine, when he enrolled in the Wisconsin Conservatory. Continuing his studies at Northwestern University, he subsequently attended the Manhattan School of Music and The Julliard School. He has served as Artist-in-Residence at Michigan State University where he is currently Professor Emeritus of Piano at the College of Music. He was the soloist on Arthur Fiedler’s last Boston Pops recording and in recent years has recorded prolifically for Ivory Classics and Blue Griffin labels. In 2012 the duo released the album, French Album II, Homage to Pedagogy in 2012 which Fanfare’s Jerry Dubin writes, “I cannot imagine any of this music being more beautifully or lovingly played than it is here.”
