JULIAN HENG YAO QIAN She looked at me, with tears of joy in her eyes. Suddenly, I was wrapped in a bone-crushing hug. “Thank goodness…” I heard her say. She was happy to see me alive. To be honest, I thought it was already over for me. It all started a week ago, I cycled my way to school as usual. Once we entered class, we had our lessons as usual. After two periods passed by, we went outside for a bit of sightseeing. The view was nice, as we were at the third floor. I stood there looking at the hills and buildings, letting time slowly slip by. Then, I heard a small, creaking noise, but the noise seemed to sound louder each time. I turned to the source of the noise. It was the railing to prevent students from free-falling from the building. But it was creaking anyway. Suddenly, a bad thought came to my mind. We usually fooled around near the railing, pushing and shoving. Then I thought, maybe all that pushing must have loosened the hold with the wall. The others might not have noticed, but Mina, the cutest girl in our class, was leaning against the railing, reading a book. The usual deafening noise that our class made softened the noise of the creaking, but fortunately I had sharp ears. When I tried to warn her, it was too late. The railing broke off, and she fell. But my body reacted instinctively. I rushed forward, and hugged her. So in the end, both of us ended up falling, but I had promised to myself that I would protect her, even if it means costing my life. So in the middle of the fall, I turned our position so that I would hit the ground and she would fall on top of me to soften her fall. I braced myself, thinking :if I were to die, at least I protected the one that I cared about. The impact came, my body felt as if two walls had smashed me from opposite sides. But before I could register the pain, I had already fainted. I found myself in a white place. It was a bright, but empty. “Where am I? What is this place? Am I … dead?” were the first few thoughts that came to my mind. But another thought slpipped by: “Is she alright?” Then, I heard a voice: “You did well, sacrificing yourself to save her. You don’t have to worry she is safe. And now is not your time, either. Go back to your world, kid. She’s waiting for you right now.” Slowly, I opened my eyes. I was in the hospital, and Mina was beside me. When she saw that I was awake, tears came to her eyes, and she pulled me to a hug. “Thank you,” she said, “Thank you for saving my live.” I was alive, and she was safe and sound. She was only slightly injured, and I only twisted my back and broke my arm, even when I thought I was dead. So, in the end, I guess since I’m alive and the person that I care about is safe, all’s well that end’s well.
