JULIAN SANZ-GARICA COMING TO RAAM? With the start of RAAM 2014 just 27 days away Spanish UltraCyclist Julian Sanz-Garcia is yet to finalize his entry. Word is he’s scrambling to recruit crew members and nail down a bit more funding to mount his fourth RAAM effort. He’s evidently confident in being able to arrange these final details as his webpage seems to assume that he will indeed be in Oceanside on June 10. While Christoph Strasser is of course this year’s favorite but Sanz-Garcia would be among the strong group of other contenders who could challenge Strasser, or at least make the battle for second interesting and exciting. The likable Spaniard burst into RAAM as a stand-out in 2008 where he made his way ahead of such names as Gerhard Gulewicz, Mark Pattinson and Dave Haase to hold second place as late as Chama, New Mexico, nearly 1000 miles into the race. While stomach issues and a fall dropped him back to eighth by Annapolis, that ride seemingly showed a glimpse of his potential. He came back the following year and was as high as sixth place in Colorado before various issues had him drop out in Taos. He skipped a few years before returning in 2012 where he posted his best finish so far with a fourth place in a time of 10 days, 4 hours and 39 minutes. We wish Julian the best fortune in finalizing his effort. He and his jovial group of smiling Spaniards bring a certain charm to RAAM. After all, bicycle racing is all about fun, isn’t it?
