JULY 2, 2014- HAMILTON SPECTATOR: Doctor credits Hamilton after being named to Order of Canada DR. JEAN CHAMBERLAIN-FROESE A Hamilton obstetrician and founder of a group that works to curtail maternal mortality in Uganda is crediting the community and her employer with helping her be named to the Order of Canada. Dr. Jean Chamberlain Froese was one of two members of the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University appointed by Governor General David Johnston on Monday, just before Canada Day. Chamberlain-Froese, of Ancaster, was recognized for her efforts to advance maternal health, notably through the creation of an academic program based in Uganda that promotes safe motherhood. She was made a Member of the Order. Chamberlain Froese was very grateful, but believed the real heroes are the women she works with in Africa who deliver babies in extremely difficult circumstances. She noted 6,000 women a year die giving birth in Uganda, compared to 30 in Canada. (**Note: Did you read that fact?) She said she would not have been able to work on this situation without the support of the Hamilton community and McMaster. She and her family — husband and three children — spend eight months a year in Uganda. She founded the organization Save the Mothers and is director of the International Womens Health Network Program at McMaster. She also has a position at St. Josephs Hospital. Ive been on faculty since 1996 (at McMaster) and theyve given me that freedom to go over there and do that work and still keep my career here, said Chamberlain Froese. I might be getting the award, but there are a lot of people behind the scenes and in the community that I am truly grateful for.
