JULY 21 OUR SUNDAY BEST Dressing for church on Sunday used to mean wearing our Sunday best, the best clothes we had in our closet. For children it meant a fancy dress, patent leather shoes with a buckle and a pretty bow in their hair for the girls and a shirt and tie with dress pants for boys. The women had a special dress to wear and the men always wore a shirt and tie, and dress pants. Today, our Sunday best has taken on a new look. Women will wear anything from pants suits to jeans and occasionally a dress. Men and children will dress casual as well. Putting on our Sunday best refers to much more than the clothes we wear. It includes the attitudes and disposition we put on as we enter the House of God for worship. In Psalm 89:7, David said God is to be greatly feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be held in reverence by all those who are around him.” It is difficult to walk into God’s house on Sunday morning when our hearts have not been prepared for worship. Therefore, we must begin making preparations the night before by getting plenty of rest. Having an attitude of prayer before service will help to overturn any traps the enemy sets in our way to interrupt an attitude of worship. Although dressing in our Sunday best for some may be a past tradition, an attitude of worship must be carried on seven days a week because true worship is living every day in a way that brings honor to God.
