The song will act as the lead single from Ms. Spruill’s February 2015-slated first-ever Jazz CD, Every Day Is a Jazz Day To Me (self-produced via Spruill House Music). “It’s a Jazz Day” is enjoying its tenth anniversary this year from the original Brenda Russell recording on 2004’s Between The Sun and The Moon. However, that’s not where Stephanie discovered the piece. “I first heard it when Brenda was performing at Catalina Bar & Grill in Hollywood last year where I was front and center,” Spruill shares. “Out of the plethora of amazing songs she’s written, that one touched me immediately. It speaks on jazz artists I love that have inspired my career. I love the lines, ‘Tea with Thelonious’ and ‘Ella e’ bella’ - I do a tribute to Thelonious Monk in my shows…and Ella Fitzgerald is one of the girls I studied most. I pulled out my iPhone and dictated, ‘I’ve got to record this record!’” The delightful recording marks a sweet reunion of friends Spruill and Russell who first met as dancers/actors on-set of TV’s “The Mac Davis Show” in the early `70s. “We were kindred spirits,” Spruill marvels. “Brenda had just finished working with Neil Sedaka and I had just finished with Nancy Sinatra. She had a daughter, I had a daughter. We met again singing on screen in the movie ‘American Hot Wax’ (1977) and got really close after that. Even if years go by where we don’t see each other, when we finally get back together, it’s like we’d never been apart. When I called and told her, ‘I want you to sing on my record, boo,’ she said, ‘I am honored you are recording my song - whatever you need! I want you to hit. This is your time.’ We hung out and had an amazing jazz day...” Stephanie Spruill’s rendition of “It’s a Jazz Day” was recorded in the home studio (Master’s Crib) of her bassist Robert “Pee Wee” Hill who was also the engineer. The cats include Darryl Crooks (guitar), Stacey Lamont Sydnor (drums), and very special guest Patrice Rushen as keyboardist and arranger. “I called my ‘sister’ Patrice up hollerin’, ‘I’m back in the game, girl!’ She said, ‘You never left! You’ve been an educator passing on all of that vocal knowledge around the world. You’ve sung on all my records. Now, it’s Patrice’s pleasure to be on yours.’” Stephanie Spruill selected “It’s a Jazz Day” as her lead single as a reflection of the depth with which Jazz music and its greatest purveyors have touched her life. “It’s all my parents played in the house besides Gospel,” Stephanie surmises. “They loved to go out at night and enjoy the music live down on Central Avenue. My mother would wake up and turn on ‘105’ (L.A.’s long lamented KBCA 105-FM). Instantly, all the hippest cats and brilliant ladies of song would come on and id be singing along…not yet understanding that this was America’s classical music I was listening to. Ever since, every day has been a jazz day for me…” “So it’s profound to record my first 10-song Jazz project: Every Day is a Jazz Day to Me – the record my fans and friends have demanded since experiencing all the jazz songs I sing in my show.” “It’s a Jazz Day” will be available as a digital download and limited edition collectible CD single for the holidays.
