JUST ONE VOICE You are blind, so you can’t see, but you can - TopicsExpress

JUST ONE VOICE You are blind, so you can’t see, but you can hear everything around you. The sounds, the voices, they are all familiar. Suddenly the door opens and you feel yourself being lifted from your bed. You are carried to another room, then outside. You are in a car. A big, noisy, scary car. You hear unfamiliar sounds, loud honks, people screaming. You are concerned, but you are with voices you know. You can’t see them but you have heard their voices for 16 years. You trust them. The car stops and you are once again lifted into waiting arms. You hear footsteps, then you hear a door open. An explosion of barks, howls, and screams fill the room! Where are all these animals and why are they so upset – so scared!!! But you are with the familiar voices, you trust them. You feel yourself being handed to someone else. You don’t know this voice. You hear yourself being taken away from the familiar voices. The new hands place you on a cold hard surface. Around you the sounds are louder, closer, unfamiliar. The voices you have known for 16 years are gone. Where are they? Are they coming back? Surely they are coming back for you!! Night falls and the sounds around you remain intense. Howls and barks have given way to whimpers and cries. You have only a thin blanket and a hard bed. Your 16 year old frame aches from the hard, damp surface. You are cold, alone, and scared. You wonder if the familiar voices made a mistake and they will realize it any second and come to get you. But they do not. In the morning the barking and howling begin again. But today hands lift you again. Fingers lace around your tiny three pound middle and you are gingerly carried out of the scary room. You are handed to another voice. A soft voice. One who calls you by name. Do I know you? Do you know the familiar voices? Are you taking me to them? You bury your head in the warm neck that hugs you close. You are too scared and traumatized to care if this voice is friendly or not. But this voice IS friendly. The voice speaks softly and tells you everything will be OK. You feel yourself being walked away from the noisy room. You begin to relax, but only slightly. You feel yourself in a car again. You cuddle into the warm lap that supports your tiny frame. Before you know it you are carried into a warm house with soft music playing. Is this my house? It feels like my house but I don’t know any of the voices or sounds. These new voices surround you. They speak in happy tones and you feel soft hands caress you, tickle your chin, rub your tummy, and massage your ears. You are given a soft fluffy bed, warm blankets, yummy food, and constant attention. You soon forget about the familiar voices. They never came back. The new voices are better. Soon you forget the old familiar voices. But you never forget the room you spent one terrible night in. The cries. The howls. The barks of terror. You never forget how scared you all were in that room. And you wonder if any of them ever found soft hands to carry them away to safety. Did they ever get to nuzzle a warm neck? Did they ever get scratches and belly rubs and ear massages? You are grateful you have been given another chance at love, but you never forget, and you bow your little head every night and thank God for the new voices. And you pray he sends a new voice just like yours for each terrified baby in that horrible room. One new voice for each baby. One new voice to take them into their warm hands, cuddly necks, and caring hearts. Just one voice. Colleen Mitchell WE LOVE YOU CHICA-CHAN! https://facebook/ChicaChan16
