Jabril - Today marks the anniversary of the CIA-backed assassination of Burkina Fasos President Thomas Sankara. He was perhaps the most successful president Africa has ever seen, in terms of what he accomplished for and with his people. To save the nation money, as President, Sankara chose to ride a bicycle to work, before his Cabinet insisted that he upgrade to a cheap Renault 5. President Sankara even lived in a small brick home and chose to wear only cotton that was proudly produced, weaved and sewn in Burkina Faso. Thomas Sankara, in four years, transformed Burkina Faso from a poor country, dependent on aid, to an economically independent and socially progressive nation. He redistributed land from the colonial feudal landlords and gave it directly to local peasants. Sankara nationalized oil wealth and used the money to double school attendance and half infant mortality. Mired in a deeply patriarchal post colonial society, Sankaras feminist policies propelled women into the forefront of the struggle as a mighty force for the revolution. Africans are clearly not given to celebrating their own heroes, but this must change. This is the type of leadership we need in Somalia, not the pathetic leadership more interested in pleasing the west and stuffing their bank accounts then helping their own people. Most of these people live in London even though they hold an office of The Somali Government. Allah, may you remove the cowards and parasites from my nations government and replace them all with fearless leaders who are more interested in developing the nation rather then increasing their Barclays UK Lloyds Bank balance amounts.
