Jack Wilshere has come under fire from Kevin Pietersen for declaring that ‘only English people’ should play for England. In a spat on Twitter, Pietersen — England’s South Africa-born cricket star — challenged Wilshere by reminding the Arsenal midfielder about other celebrated British sportsmen who came from overseas. Pietersen asked Wilshere: ‘Interested to know how you define foreigner? Would that include me, Strauss, Trott, Prior, Justin Rose, Froome, Mo Farah?’ Wilshere, already active on Twitter trying to defend himself against the criticism that followed his official FA interview on Tuesday, replied to Pietersen. ‘With all due respect Mr Pietersen the question was about Football! Cricket, cycling, athletics is not my field!’, he wrote. Pietersen then hit back: ‘Same difference. It’s about representing your country! In any sport!’ The Arsenal midfielder tried to deny his comments were made in relation to the subject of whether Manchester United’s Belgium-born midfielder Adnan Januzaj could play for England.
