Jack began in Cardiff in 1992. Only me and Matthew made it to London. that was late 93. By the end of 94 the group was complete. Some recruited, if I remember correctly from a Melody maker ad. (Oddly, I think James Cook turned up for an interview at my shared house in Archway but he was too obviously a front-man to fit and we later became friends). I remember George Wright in particular. (He had the huge charisma of someone to whom it didnt matter if he knew what he was doing or not. And he asked me to go to Club X that same night we met)...anyway...after about 3 gigs,by early 95 we were signed, (although I wonder or not if it was to the right label). But anyway. By the time this clip was filmed, we had made the album Id wanted to make, with the producer of Scott Walkers most recent albums. I was temporarily satiated. I thought wed made a strange, atypical, timeless treasure and maybe I was right. You tell me. The day we played this gig, we had gotten the melody make single of the week for our first single. Was I surprised? No. I was pleased but not ..surprised. Things were going to plan and even if I sometimes felt we were above the audiences heads at this stage, (after all, no one had heard anything on record yet) I had complete confidence in our...uniqueness. And classicism. Gigs were hit and miss, depending on how much wed drunk or ingested before them, but that was part of the deal. We were there to do what we had to do.
