Jack stole from the village and wad being chased out of town. When he ran across the Devil who said its time to die. Jack said Not yet I will offer you a chance to bedevil the villagers who chase me before you take my soul. Just turn into a silver coin and I will pay them for what I stole. Then you disappear and watch them bicker over who stole it. The devil agreed and turned into a coin inside Jacks wallet. But Jack had tricked the devil and surrounded his wallet with crosses trapping the devil leaving him powerless. The devil was set free when Jack made him promise to never take his soul. Eventually Jack died and heaven would not have him, he had sinned too much. The devil refused him as well because of his promise. So the devil gave Jack an ember from Hell that would never burn out. Jack carved a face into a pumpkin and put the ember inside to use as his lantern. Jack forever wanders the land with his Pumpkin Lantern looking for a place for his soul to rest. Jack o Lantern
