Jacksonville, North Carolina as described by someone who grew up - TopicsExpress

Jacksonville, North Carolina as described by someone who grew up there: its a decent size town, but there is nothing here except car dealerships, pawn shops, tattoo parlors, strip clubs, and three military bases. Ryan Adams writes about his home town in shades of grey. There is nothing much happening in Jacksonville, and there is nothing much happening in the lyrics of this song. But, somehow, Adams forges a stark beauty amidst the grime and the boredom he outlines. This is why I have traveled around the greater midwest with friends to watch this guy perform. I suppose Ive seen him over a dozen times over the years. His live shows are a crapshoot, ranging from narcissistic goofery to some of the most transcendent live performances Ive ever seen. His lyrical and vocal ability (he does more with the voice he has than just about anyone out there), and the amazing melodic sense that propels his best work make it worth the risk. If he can do what he does here with the minimal autobiographical material afforded by Jacksonville, he can do pert near anything! https://youtube/watch?v=1EqcXJzWoFU
