Jacqueline Ohrstrom’s Demonstrative, now a two-time winner of the New York Turf Writers Cup (Gr. 1), has been assigned highweight of 158 pounds for Belmont Park’s $150,000 Lonesome Glory Handicap (Gr. 1) on Thursday, Sept. 18. Nine nominees were assigned weights for the 2 1/2-mile Lonesome Glory by Bill Gallo Jr., the National Steeplechase Association’s director of racing. Demonstrative’s highly professional victory in Saratoga Race Course’s $150,000 New York Turf Writers on Aug. 25 earned him a four-pound spread over reigning Eclipse Award winner Divine Fortune, who was withheld from the New York Turf Writers after being pulled up in Saratoga’s A. P. Smithwick Memorial (Gr. 1). Trained by Richard Valentine, Demonstrative finished a very close second in the Smithwick. Winner of the $150,000 Calvin Houghland Iroquois (Gr. 1) in May, Bill Pape’s Divine Fortune was among five Lonesome Glory nominees from trainer Jonathan Sheppard’s stable. Sheppard’s Italian Wedding, winner of the 2013 New York Turf Writers and third this year, was assigned 152 pounds, two fewer than Divine Fortune. Fourth in the weights at 144 pounds is Sheppard’s Barnstorming, who closed ground late to finish second in the New York Turf Writers, a half-length behind Demonstrative. All other nominees carry 140 pounds. Here are the nine nominees for the $150,000 Lonesome Glory Handicap (Gr. 1) arranged by their handicap weight assignments. Demonstrative.
