Jade P Training health and fitness advice... Strengthening your Core So what are your bodies core muscles? A lot of people think of the core as a nice six-pack or strong toned abs but the truth is that the abdominal muscles are a very small part of the core. The abs or 6 pack as people like to call them have very limited and specific action, and what experts refer to as the core actually consists of many different muscles that stabilize the spine and pelvis, and run the entire length of the torso. When these muscles contract, they stabilize the spine, pelvis and shoulder girdle and create a solid base of support. These muscles make it possible to stand upright and move on two feet. They help control movements and help shift your body weight. A strong core distributes the stresses of weight bearing and protects the back. Core conditioning exercise programs need to target all these muscle groups to be effective. The Major muscles that are included are the pelvic floor muscles, Transversus abdominis, Multifidus, internal and external Obliques, Rectus abdominis, Erector spinae (sacrospinalis) especially the Longissimus thoracis, and the diaphragm. Just because someone is strong, does not mean they will have a strong core, and this is true for a lot of people. So why do we train the core? A strong core keeps your body aligned, so that you can function properly and will help ensure everything stays protected as you move. If your core is strong, you’ll be hard pressed not to carry yourself with confidence. It’s important to build core stability first, and then build core strength once everything is working like it should. Back pain is a common side effect of having weak core muscles because if your abdominals are weak your back muscles could do too much. Once you’ve developed your core stability, you can start working on the more superficial core muscles to build strength you’ll be able to see. But Building a strong core takes more than you think and the way to a flatter stomach is definitely not by doing hundreds of crunches. When you’re thinking about getting a flatter stomach it is all about eating right! It is about 70% good healthy eating and only 30% exercise when it comes to your stomach. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t train the muscles, it just means you wont see the benefits if you don’t eat right. With exercises for your core its not about how many, its about doing the exercises correctly and slowly. (Always speak to a doctor or professional before performing anything new.)
