Jagjitji deserved the Bharat Ratna in 2000 as an all round secular - TopicsExpress

Jagjitji deserved the Bharat Ratna in 2000 as an all round secular artiste of the last millennium from India. I made and raised this demand in public for the first time in 2000 as we were preparing to step into the new millennium as for a Padma award - (perhaps again for the first time in the print media in The Sunday Tribune of June 4, 1995 through my detailed article and his first ever first biography). I was definitely disappointed when this was not acceded to and thought it was futile to pursue it with those in power who can not understand his matchless contribution to music, harmony, peace and his respect for legendary shairs of all times and all genres, his matchless revival of ghazal making it popular with western audiences as much as in the Asian sub continent and his equal love for the divine, patriotic music in most languages..! And please remember - Jeeti Bhai did and achieved this all on his own broad and humble shoulders ..(not to be taken as a comparison), un like many legendary singers like Raffi Sahib, Manna Da, Kishore Dada - he rarely required support of professional composers or 100 plus bands of orchestra. He achieved all with equal ease single handed, with just the basic Indian classical instruments, using western instruments later only to meet global and general public demand. After my write up in The Tribune, he called me up and thanked me and said he is not in race for such rewards but as a devoted fan of his, I indeed was and will remain ever. Pt Ravi Shankar ji agreed with me that Jeeti Bhai deserves a Bharat Ratna but will remain a Maha Nav Ratana of music ever in the hearts of not only his fans but an entire galaxy of legendary singers seen so far in our life span, if for some reasons political will of the country fails to bestow this on him. MannaDa in one of my interviews with him too agreed that Jeeti Bhai was the best ghazal singer in his opinion too and soon after this meeting, I was happy to see him with Jeeti Bhai in TOI - a copy I must still be having with me. It is my earnest appeal to our Prime Minister to honour Jeeti Bhai with a Bharat Ratna this year !! For Jeeti Bhai, it will not be late even now, nor posthumous for He is still very much live and vibrant in his in numerable fans and lovers of genuine music, solo achievers !
