Jagmohan forced Pandits to leave Kashmir: Congress KP group demands whitepaper on action taken for their rehabilitation Srinagar, Jan 19: Senior Congress leader and former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh Digvijay Singh Monday said it was the then Governor of J&K Jagmohan who forced Kashmiri Pandits to leave the valley on January 19, 1990. “Kashmiri Pandits were unnecessarily forced to leave the Valley by Jagmohan. Hindus and Muslims lived together for Centuries in Kashmir,” Singh wrote on microblogging site Twitter. He further said it is sad they (KPs) haven’t been settled by successive governments. “If anyone who deserves Ghar Vapsi it is Kashmiri Pandits”. It is not the first time that a senior congress leader has blamed Jagmohan for the migration of Kashmiri Pandits from Valley after eruption of militancy in the State. Senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar in his book titled, “Confessions of a Secular Fundamentalist” has written in details how Jagmohan gave a safe passage to KPs to Jammu before unleashing “terror” in the valley. A day after Kashmiri Pandits migrated to Jammu, the paramilitary CRPF men fired on protesters at Gaw Kadal area in the uptown Srinagar on January, 20 1990. Though official figures put the number of fatalities at 21, human rights groups say 51 persons were killed in the massacre. In April last year, former J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah also blamed Jagmohan for exodus of Pandits from the Valley. “The exodus of Pandits from Kashmir took place under Jagmohan, who was appointed governor by the then central government, which was supported by BJP,” he had said. Omar today said the BJP led government at the Centre should focus on the return of the community to their homes in the valley. “25 years is a life time. If there is a ghar wapasi, the BJP and the rest of us should really be focusing on is this one,” Omar wrote on microblogging site twitter. Meanwhile, an organisation of Kashmir Pandits demanded a white-paper on the action taken by Jammu and Kashmir government and the Centre on the rehabilitation of the community, 25 years after its mass exodus from the Valley in the wake of militancy. “We demand a white-paper be issued by the state and the Central government on the action taken to rehabilitate and bring back Kashmiri Hindus, who left their homes in the wake of militancy in 1990,” Vinod Pandit, chairman of All Parties Migrants Coordination Committee (APMCC), told reporters here. APMCC staged protests at Press Colony here to commemorate the 25 years of migration of the community. “We want to know what steps have both the governments taken in the last 25 years to rehabilitate the Kashmiri Pandits,” he said.
