Jai SrimanNarayana #Post9, In this post we continue our discussion on misconceptions regarding Karma. The next misconception is that by being idle one can escape karma. This is not true as even the process of inhaling is killing millions of organisms, which in itself is attracting karma. Further in the Bhagawat Gita Krishna says “karmany evadhikaras te ma phaleshu kadacana ma karma-phala-hetur bhur ma te sango stv akarmani” where astu akarmani specifically means one should not refrain from performing his duties. The third misconception is that - karma only effects the doer or karmi. To understand this and the grip of karma here is a good example if one were to watch some devotional movie on tv then punyam is accumulated by not just the person watching tv or the maker of the movie but punyam is also acquired by the salesman who sold the tv, the owner of the tv company, the electrical engineer who gave the home the electricity connection etc. Spirituality is like a medicine one has to take it as prescribed by the doctor or the sashtras. Even adharmic activity performed in violation of Varnashrama dharma is a gross sin. There is an example given in Sri Ramayanam where a person goes to Sri Rama’s darbar and claims that SriRama is not performing the duties of a king properly. The cause of this accusation was because the person’s young son had met with Akalamritu (untimely death – or death at a very young age). Sri Rama then goes across his kingdom and finds a person performing tapas in violation of his varna. Sri Rama immediately recognises this to be the cause of the young boy’s death and kills this person. From this it should be clear that one should stick to recommendations of the sashtra. Just because one gets a slight spiritual inclination he should not consider living the life of a sanyasi. I stress on this point because I have personally come across many people who were atheists initially and by God’s grace they come to know Perumal and immediately talk about going to forest shortly to perform tapas etc. This is completely in violation of the sashtras. One has the moral duty of living life according to the sashtras, performing his duty, begetting children and serving the community. It is important to understand that Vaisnhavism is about doing good for the community as every entity of the community and the creation is a part of Perumal. There is another example of how a person who is fulfilling his duty without attachment to the fruits is dear to the lord, please refer to the story of Pundalik (hindu-blog/2009/12/story-of-lord-vithal-at-pandarpur-story.html). Having analysed the role of karma and how it impacts us all we will move on to process by which one can rid himself of karma in the next post. jetuk.org/
