Jake Dysons Ariel: a ceiling light that uses satellite tech: The Ariel lights futuristic aluminium fins and copper heat pipes dissipate heat from the powerful LEDs in the middle. A cluster of very strong LEDs and some fancy lenses create a rectangle of light from a single bulb in the middle. The LEDs used here have a number of advantages over lightsaber-style bulbs: theyre dimmable, they use less power, and they make nicer light - Jake Dyson offers two colour temperatures as standard but you can futher tweak the Ariels white balance if you wish. Whereas all neon striplighting is set to a colour temperature we like to call I Wonder If This Headache Will Last Forever. As with their CSYS lamps, these lights are guaranteed to last well over a decade, and possibly quite a bit longer than that. So, while the Ariel wont be cheap (theres no pricing information yet), it could save you money in the long run.
