James Brown, who many arent aware of began his career singing gospel, actually filled in for Little Richard pretending to be him. They say that is how he learned to scream. Regardless his version of Georgia on my mind is one of the greatest renditions ever. This version was recorded live and reminds me of a time when great singers shared their talents, and there are still some that do today who are exceptional, and the words/music hits it target like an arrow...the soul. James Brown described soul as you cant - grew up being told you cant be this - grew up without means and the word said you cant. Elvis Presley said that soul is something you cant buy - you cant teach - you cant see it - but when you hear it there is an inescapable feeling - and, man, when you sing it its like, its like, a part of heaven - thats why I try to surround myself with great singers and talents - no matter where they come from, or the color of their skin, it is like nothing else. Man, sometimes onstage I close my eyes and listen to JD or Kathy and I cant believe I am sharing a stage with them. I catch myself hanging on every note and no matter how Im feeling getting on that stage is a type of magic with the fans and everything. And when we are on the music flows from our soul and maybe, just maybe, we have touched the souls of others. One thing I know for sure is that everytime we play there is a new audience and I want them to enjoy themselves for those two hours. Its not like a record or people wouldnt choose to come to the concert. Its like nothing else and even after shows we get together and sing gospel songs all night. It makes me feel like a kid again. No matter how tired I am, or things going on in my life, to sing is to be close to god. At least thats the way it is for me.
