James Grays THE IMMIGRANT (2013) features what I would consider to be the supernaturally talented Marion Cotillards finest performance to date. There is a particular confession scene which makes a brilliant case for her as a silent film actress in the expressive force conveyed through her face alone, to say nothing of the range she displays with her Polish and English delivery (hers is a Polish accent that would give Meryl Streep in Sophies Choice a run for its money). Its an exceptionally well made melodrama, featuring luminous photography by Darius Khondji and exquisite costumes by Patricia Norris, especially. Wonderfully emotive and powerfully uplifting, the final shot is heartbreaking. Joaquin Phoenix is also superlative in a complex role.
