James H. Doan Home c. 1857 This home at 203 W. Quitman St. was built by Captain Jim Doan, who joined the Confederacy and served in Roddys Command under Gen. Nathan B. Forrest. Over the years, many alternations have been made to the home. The traditional L shape was enclosed and made into a long hallway, and two additional rooms were built. The home contains 5 fireplaces (the home originally had 7) and random birch parquet floors. According to Lila McDonalds written history, a couple of the Doan boys managed to slip by guards and tap on the window of the room occupied by their mother and sisters to inquire if they were being properly treated. Assured the women were being shown every courtesy, the two disappeared... Another lighthearted account occurring after the Battle of Iuka: Another Doan, possibly James father who was much too old to fight, met the advance element of the incoming Union Army. He drew a line across the road with his cane and dared the soldiers to cross. To their credit, they treated him with respect and humored him for a few minutes before marching on... COPIED from Tishomingo County Archives ....
