James H. Norton Memorial A 4th of July Member, Family and Friends Tournament In Honor of Trenton Country Club course architect, James H. Norton Come out to TCC on the Fourth of July and play in a special tournament honoring the course architect, James H. Norton. This Better Ball of Partners event will feature prizes for both gross and net competitions for Men, Women, and Children. In addition, all play that day will commence at the 8th hole and complete at the 7th hole, as this was the original Norton routing. Come on out and experience this truly unique event! Casual Play (not in the tournament) is welcome as well. About the event: The format will be Better Ball of Partners. Men, Women, Junior golfers and Guests are welcome and must have a valid USGA handicap index. The net result shall supersede the gross result for award and reporting considerations. The net winner, place or show may not be awarded for a prize in the corresponding gross event. All play, regardless of participation of the event, will commence at the 8th hole. Please arrange a tee time with the golf shop. The last tee time for the tournament will be 3:00 pm. About the architect: James H. Norton was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, down the road from notable courses, Royal Troon and Prestwick. He was hired as the club Professional at Trenton Country Club in 1906 and gave lessons, assigned handicaps to the members, made golf clubs and designed golf courses. Concurrently, he was also the head Golf Instructor of the Lawrenceville School. With the acquisition of railroad land in 1913, the club charged Norton with designing a full 18-hole course for member play. Roughly 8 months later, he completed the work in the Spring of 1914, and the Trenton Evening Times reported his efforts to be, “the finest course in the East.” 100 years ago this summer, he qualified for the US Open at the Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.
