I love what he said about the religion being hijacked by angry young men on the internet who think there is only one correct understanding of Islam (theirs, of course). O you who believe, if youre convinced that youre on the straight path and the rest of the world is astray, you may want to entertain the idea that the reverse may be true. Islam is mainly threatened by those who mainly say that Islam is threatened. Do you think that Allah would promise to protect the Quran but to allow the meaning of the words to vanish? Puritanism is the greatest threat to the afterlife of modern Muslims; it turns hearts to stone and brings decent people to spill innocent blood and betray every value they claim to uphold, all in the name of restoring Islam to a purer form. I ask every Muslim who reads this to echo the dua of Muhammad, peace be upon him, in your prayers: O Allah! Treat harshly those who rule over my Ummah with harshness, and treat gently those who rule over my Ummah with gentleness. [Muslim] وعن عائشة رضي الله عنها قالت: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول في بيتى هذا: “اللهم من ولى من أمر أمتى شيئاً فشق عليهم، فاشقق عليه ومن ولى من أمر أمتى شيئاً، فرفق بهم، فارفق به” ((رواه مسلم)).
