Jammu, Aug 6: In a major success to bust e- crime, police here have arrested three alleged kingpins of a gang that cloned credit cards of several people abroad and stole crores of rupees. The gang was busted following arrest of a youth from Kashmir, Owais Yousuf Kabboo son of Muhammad Yousuf Kabboo of Nund Rish Colony, Bemina Srinagar, who was trying to procure Credit Card Swipe machines (Point of Sale machines) from Jewel Chowk area in Jammu city. The accused, sources said, made shocking revelations during interrogation. A case for cheating, criminal conspiracy, fraud and forgery was registered against him. Senior Superintendent of Police Jammu Atul Goel told media persons that Owais along with his accomplices used to procure credit card machines from “willing shopkeepers” and dispatched them to Bangalore where they swiped the cloned credit cards (mainly international credit cards). The gang is believed to be part of an international fraud where accused use to intercept packages containing credit cards sent by banks, steal data using sophisticated gadgets and clone cards. The SP said the amount for which the card would be swiped was transferred to the account of the concerned shopkeeper, from where it would be shared amongst the gang members. “Since most of the cloned cards were from abroad and the victims being abroad, there was little chances of any complaint being filed about the fraud”, Goel said, while elaborating the modus operendi used by the accused. He said that based on the inputs provided by Owais, during his question, a police team arrested his accomplices, Shabbir Ahmad Mir son of Ghulam Rasool Mir of Firozabagh Srinagar. Four such credit card machines, which had been earlier used in such fraudulent transactions, were also seized, police said adding that the associated bank accounts were frozen and their details obtained.
