Jan Dismas Zelenka was an important Czech composer during the Baroque era. He was born on this date in 1679. Zelenka is sometimes considered Bachs Catholic counterpart, and they were friends. Zelenka was a guest at Bachs house for awhile, and Bach performed some of his works. Zelenka was a master of counterpoint, and wrote complex fugues, ornate operatic arias, galant-style dances, baroque recitatives, Palestrina-like chorales, and virtuosic concertos. Zelenka is best known for his sacred music. His music was lost in obscurity until Smetana reintroduced him to the world.
