Jana Mali: Social work with older people: The neglected field of social work In the twenty-first century, the older generation represents a major challenge for social work in terms of the concepts, methods and skills required for work with older people. In this paper we want to draw attention to the importance of social work with older people in the wake of demographic changes. With the focus on social work readiness for dealing with older people, the conceptual basis and possibilities for professional work and options for relevant knowledge to deal with the older people, we present a conceptual basis that is good for the development of social work, and the dynamic between general and specialised field of social work. The dynamic is described in two models. The first is the model of conceptualisation in which we present concepts of social work with older people. The second is the model of ‘society levels’ in which we present micro, meso and macro levels of social work with older people. The presentation of the two models clearly demonstrates that generic social work and specialised work with older people are inseparable but the higher inclusion of the older population in social work and stronger response to their needs may bring about a series of new methods and skills within the more general field of social work. — at Dubrovnik.
