** #Janasena ISM book review** by my dear friend - Sheela Armani K fashion director, celebrity shopper, animal n hiv activist and author..! Review - You may not know it, but your world is a little darker… Last night, as I finished this massive tome, I felt a man’s search for fulfillment, eventual satisfaction and an attempt to, for lack of better words, “chase that feeling”! This is the definitive work, the dashing rebel whose epic dream is to end poverty and injustice. I rarely give those 5 stars, but this one deserves it. The author tries to give an account as balanced as he possibly could about a man as complex as Kalyan. The research effort put into this is immense and it shows in the details. I have seen too much absurdity with Kalyan’s face on it; tees, bandanas, medallions, posters and what not! His persona has been so commodified, it is important to understand who he is and what he represents. Kalyan is a true believer in liberating the underclass and freeing the country from economic domination, He is brilliant, curious, compassionate and utterly committed to his principal beliefs. And he would love to know his views are being espoused in the country he was born in! What I loved about his book was not only the lens on the fascinating ideologies, but the dozens of journal excerpts. I mean what a deeply reflective thinker. What a passionate soul. A true inspiration to the ones who need a boost of courage to take the risk of following what they believe in, even if it means sacrificing the easy road. In many ways, Kalyan, is an archetype for the baby boomer generation. To all the youngsters out there who are asking, “What are my values and how will I commit to them in my life?” I live in a country where I’m allowed to read what I want, and think for myself, so I’m glad these things never came to pass. My country’s politics are very flawed, but so is communism, in my humble opinion. It is also my opinion that there’s no government that can be operated perfectly, but that is another topic. I agree that I approached him with a degree of skepticism given his pop-culture phenomenon: millions of people who admire him but know almost nothing of him. Kalyan is, however, loved by many people. His very presence is enough to even spark my own affection, as is a rare and most interesting individual. They tried so hard to smear his character but to no avail. A man who leads by example. A man who profoundly believes in UNIVERSAL SOCIAL JUSTICE. A man who refuses positions of power and materialist gains. A man who believes that the individual by himself is WORTHLESS but being part of a successful society that has shared values and practice social justice is PRICELESS. My review perhaps does not exhibit this quality, but is more of a result of the conclusions I drew from the book and not a reflection on any inherent biases the author might have! The author does not seek to beatify or demonize, he seeks to report. I’m not usually interested in politics, but Kalyan’s devotion to his principles that his enthusiasm spreads and you understand why he does what he does, the author made me understand how Kalyan reasoned! This is the legacy, and the proof is, every time we witness a social movement or demonstration anywhere around, his ever famous portrait hangs HIGH. And may I say, this book changes the way I view things….. Intellectualism- Socialism- Mysticism (ISM) FINAL RATING -> ***** [5 out of 5]
