January 12: To Experience Fresh Encounters Invite the Lord to visit your family (spouse, children, mom, dad, brothers, sisters, etc.) in a fresh new way in 2014. Pray that this year, you, your family and your close friends will encounter the holiness and sovereign power of God that will leave each one changed by His presence and more committed to His kingdom. Make known to the sons of men Your might acts And the glory of the majesty of Your kingdom. (Psalm 145:12 NASB95) “It will come about after this That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and daughters will prophesy, Your old men will dream dreams, Your young men will see visions. (Joel 2:28; NASB95) Closed Encounters of the Family Kind In 1977 Steven Spielberg gave us a classic movie about cableman Roy Neary who was one of several people to experience a close encounter of the first kind, witnessing UFO’s flying through the night sky. Meanwhile, government agents around the world have a close encounter of the second kind, discovery physical evidence of otherworldly visitors in the form of military vehicles that went missing decades ago suddenly appearing in the middle of nowhere. Roy and the agents both follow the clues they have been given to reach a site where they will have a close encounter of the third kind: contact. Contact is the greatest of all encounters and nowhere is it more important than in your home. I don’t simply mean passing by each other as you grab a bite on the way out the door to head to your next agenda item. I mean real, authentic encounters with the spiritual side of you that reveals to your family members the real contact you claim to have with God. So how do you do that? Tell your God stories at home! Look for God in extraordinary ways in your ordinary daily situation and then tell your family about it. Your family may find what God did in the life of Paul and Peter interesting, but they will find it life changing when they hear what you see Him doing in you. In it interesting to me how many people often know that their spouse or parent is a Christian, but those same family members cannot tell you how that person came to Christ. Their testimony. Their God encounter. Listen to what the Psalmist said about the power of sharing your everyday God encounters with your family. Psalms 78:4-7 (NASB) “But tell to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, And his strength and His wondrous works that He has done. For He established a testimony in Jacob And appointed a law in Israel, Which He commanded our fathers That they should teach them to their children, That the generation to come might know, even the children yet to be born, That they may arise and tell them to their children, That they should put their confidence in God And not forget the works of God, But Keep his commandments.” Psalms 145:12 (NASB) to make known to the sons of men Your mighty acts And the glory of the majesty of Your kingdom. If you won’t talk about your encounters with God at home, where will you? Prayer: Abba, Father, Daddy. I invite you into the everyday reality of life that is family, my family. I pray that all who interact with me under my roof will experience you in me as I am transformed by the renewing of my mind by Your Spirit and Your Word. Help me to see You at work around me in a faithful and natural way, and help me tell my stories of Your faithfulness to the members of my family. Keep me in real contact with my family by staying in contact with you each day of this year.
