\♬/ ✪ January 15th: On this Day in Music History! ✪ \♬/ 1949: Born, Ronald Wayne Ronnie Van Zant was an American lead vocalist and founding member of the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. ---------------- 1951: Born, Peter Rodney Biff Byford is an English singer best known as the lead singer of the heavy metal band Saxon. ---------------- 1961: The Supremes signed a world wide recording contract with Motown Records. Originally founded as the Primettes, they became the most commercially successful of Motowns acts and are, to date, Americas most successful vocal group with 12 No.1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. ---------------- 1965: The Who released their debut single “I Can’t Explain” in the U.K., With Jimmy Page on guitar and The Ivy League on backing vocals it would reach #8 on the U.K. Singles Chart. ---------------- 1967: Ed Sullivan (CBS) - Rolling Stones (Sullivan forced the group to change Lets Spend the Night Together to Lets Spend Some Time Together. ---------------- 1974: Brownsville Station received their only Gold record for their song “Smokin’ in the Boys Room”, which peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart & later covered by Motley Crue in 1985, which became the Crue’s first top 40 single. ---------------- 1972: Led Zeppelins Black Dog made its debut on the US singles chart. The groups third single peaked at No.15 and spent 8 weeks on the chart. The songs title is a reference to a nameless, black Labrador retriever that wandered around the Headley Grange studios during recording. ---------------- 1976: Paul Simonon auditions for what would eventually become the Clash. ---------------- 1976: Guitarist Joe Walsh makes his debut with the Eagles. He’s onboard for the group’s Australia/Japan tour. ---------------- 1977: The Eagles reached number one on the Billboard 200 Album Chart for the third time with Hotel California which spent eight non-consecutive weeks at number one. ---------------- 1982: The Police kicked off the North American leg of their tour in support of Ghost in the Machine at Boston Garden. The Go-Go’s were the opening act. ---------------- 1983: Men At Work started a four week run at No.1 in the US singles chart with Down Under the Australian act groups second US No.1, also a No.1 in the UK. ---------------- 1992: Longtime bassist for Elton John, Dee Murray died in Nashville after suffering a stroke. He was 45 years old. ---------------- 1994: Bryan Adams began a two night stand at the Le Let Theatre in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
