January 19, 2014 Proverbs 19:21 (KJV) There are many devices in a mans heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand. There are in fact many options out there for believers to seek and obtain counsel. We can search GOOGLE, we can watch YOU TUBE, we can search WIKIPEDIA, we can basically exhaust the wisdom of men at our fingertips should we desire to do so. For many years of my professional life, I have worked for a few men and women that have I have often trusted and sought out their counsel on matters that were troubling me. In many cases we often find ourselves looking for someone to agree with the thoughts and intents of our hearts in order to justify our actions. My grandmother always says to me in those moments, you are deceiving yourself son, and oh how wise she is to say so! Our hearts can so easily deceive us and itself be deceived every day. Jeremiah 17:9 (KJV) 9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? In today’s Proverb we see the problem of man and his desire to project his heart into his life’s situations. In our arrogance we believe God does not see our selfish motives and actions. Nothing is hid from the eyes of the Lord! He seeth the good and the evil! A child motivated by greed always convinces his parents he needs more. A man married to the pursuit of financial gain will convince himself he is doing it for the good of his family. A woman who constantly is away from her children, her husband, and her home will convince herself she deserves the free time out. A wayward child of God will convince himself he does not need church at all and so he never darkens the door of God’s house again. Counsel like that does not come from God, but through the devices in a man’s heart. Unfortunately, men always waiver in their devices and are often found regretting their actions when it’s too late. The good news today is that there is an alternative to listening to ourselves and to each other; we can listen to the counsel of the Lord! When we choose not to jump into a situation based on our own emotional responses and instead choose to seek the counsel of the Lord, we do so to His delight and blessing. In 2 Chronicles 18:3-5 (KJV) King Jehoshaphat of Judah was asked to go into battle with King Ahab and even though they were of the same people, and were from the same lands, he asked permission to seek the counsel of God first. In doing so 400 prophets of Israel prayed together seeking the Will of God for the battle. In the end, God told them that they had His blessing on the fight in Ramothgilead. Pray and ask God for His counsel in what troubles your heart today and then be patient, God is never late! His counsel will never waiver and it will stand the test of time!
