January 29, 2008: Quadriplegic Brian Sterner was dumped from his wheelchair as he was being booked for an alleged traffic violation at the Hillsborough County, Florida Sheriffs Office jail facility. Surveillance video showed Sterner tumbling to the floor and officers searching his clothing as he lay prone.The video raised concerns about police treatment of the disabled after being widely circulated on news channels and YouTube. After the video was publicized, the deputy responsible resigned and was charged with felony abuse on a disabled person. Charges were dropped when she agreed to a plea bargain in which she would perform 100 hours of community service with the disabled and agree never to work in law enforcement again. Several other deputies were suspended without pay, and one supervisor was fired for not reporting the incident.
