January 31 - National Brandy Alexander Day & National Popcorn Day Popcorn was first cultivated thousands of years ago by the people living in Peru. A large-scale, commercial popcorn machine was invented by Charles Cretors in 1885 and introduced at the Columbian Exposition in 1893. At the same worlds fair, F.W. Rueckheim introduced the first caramel corn. Rueckheim’s brother, Louis, slightly altered the recipe and introduced it as “Cracker Jack” popcorn in 1896. Frederick C. Mennen is credited with developing in 1958 and marketing in 1959 “Jiffy Pop”. Brandy Alexander is a cocktail consisting of equal parts cognac, cream, and crème de cacao. The drink became popular during the early 20th century. It is a variation of an earlier, gin-based cocktail called simply an Alexander. There are many rumors about its origins. It was supposedly created at the time of the wedding of Princess Mary and Viscount Lascelles, in London, in 1922. The drama critic Alexander Woollcott claimed that it was named after him. Others say it was named after the Russian tsar Alexander II. So munch on some popcorn while sipping a Brandy Alexander.
