Januarys transfer madness was eventually quieter than previous windows but a few top deals still stand out, most notably the £37.1 move which saw Juan Mata swap Chelsea for Manchester United. The Mata move shows that United are willing to spend for improvement, signing a proven Prmeier League playmaker lot of experience who was voted Chelsea’s best player for the past two seasons. Juan Mata could be a galvanising signing like Mesut Ozil is for Arsenal. Other signings that deserve recognition include a £21m return to Chelsea for Nemanja Matic, who left the club in 2011 as a part of the David Luiz deal. Matic could be a eventual replacement for the Chelsea legend Frank Lampard. Chelsea were very busy, also signing Egyptian international Mohammed Salah from FC Basal and young French starlet Kurt Zouma from Saint-Etienne on the deadline day. Zouma has been tipped to be the captain of the French national team one day by manager Didier Dechamps. This January transfer window didn’t excite as much as the summer equivalent, but this window was a relatively exciting one for Chelsea and Manchester United fans at least. As per usual in January many loan signings were made, the most notable of which saw Wilfried Zaha move from Man United to Cardiff City. Zaha can now prove that he belongs in the United first team now that he has regular playing time. Players like Lewis Holtby and Adel Taarat also made loan switches, to Fulham and AC Milan respectively. Though there weren’t many huge signings, the summer transfer window looks to be very promising in terms of wholesale additions, with starlets like Julian Draxler linked with moves to the Premier League.
