Japanese experts are gearing up to develop the country’s newt-generation mainstay rocket for launching satellites. The development of the planned rocket, the H3, is expected to begin in fiscal 2014.The rocket will use liquid fuel for its main engine, and solid fuel for its boosters.Development is estimated to cost about two billion dollars.Engineers hope to launch the first H3 in fiscal 2020.They plan to slash the launch cost by up to half from the 98 million dollars required for the present model. The new rocket would succeed the current H2A rocket. The H2A has sent satellites into space 16 consecutive times.Although it has gained trust in the commercial market, the high cost has hindered its international conpetitiveness.A government space panel is scheduled to formally decide on the development of the H3 rocket later this month. It plans to seek reserch-and-development outlays in the government’s budget for the next fiscal year.
