Japanese students share Far Eastern culture at University of Winchester An interactive exhibition of Japanese culture and arts takes place at the University of Winchester next month (19 August). Students from the Nagoya University of Foreign Studies (NUFS) in Japan are organising the event while studying at Winchester’s English Language Summer School. The exhibition offers students, staff and members of the public an insight to Japanese life, including the opportunity to try Japanese calligraphy, origami and traditional Japanese confectionary, wagashi. The Japanese students will talk about yukata – a type of kimono worn in the summer – and the extraordinary life of ninjas. The exhibition is being organised by 30 students from the School of Contemporary International studies at NUFS, who are particularly interested in British culture and language. Their visit is one of many arranged between the two universities over the past few years. “The University of Winchester values its longstanding international relationship with the Nagoya University of Foreign Studies for the knowledge, experiences and opportunities this has given both institutions and their students,” said Ivan Preston, Head of the English Language Teaching and Support Unit which runs the summer school. “This exhibition is a way of allowing Winchester to share in Japan’s unique and diverse culture for the enrichment of its students, staff and the local community.” The Japan Day exhibition takes place at 1.30-6pm on 19 August at the West Downs Centre, University of Winchester, Sparkford Road, Winchester, Hampshire SO22 5HT.
