Jason Dacosta named my Tampa Bay Downs Trainer of the Year for 2012-2013 Gradually, but with unwavering purpose, DaCosta is emerging from the shadow cast by his father, perennial-leading Jamaican trainer Wayne DaCosta. The 27-year-old Tampa Bay Downs newcomer was his father’s assistant for five years, but his memories of accompanying the Jamaican Hall of Fame conditioner to his Caymanas Park barn date to early childhood. After two years in college studying business administration, Jason arrived in the United States in 2009. (Courtesy of the Tampa Bay Downs Blog – Racing In The Sunshine) After being shut out with just five starters at the previous two meetings, Dacosta busted out with 34% winners and 64% ITM from 58 starters last season and was 90% ITM when favored at the meeting. His best two angles at the meeting were the L1-3 + RtS or StR and the TtoD + Dropdown. As of this writing, he is 50% ITM with all starters in 2013. Like the hero of Greek mythology, this Jason is also in search of the Golden Fleece and he may find it right here in Oldsmar. But you won’t get a price… Congratulations Mr. Dacosta and welcome to Tampa Bay Downs!
